General note

Modelled on the Arc de Triomphe in Paris, this arch was erected on Princes Bridge for the opening of the Parliament of the Commonwealth of Australia in 1901. Prince George, Duke of Cornwall and York (later King George V) officiated the proceedings; Melbourne was decorated with a series of grand arches to celebrate the occasion and the visit of the royal duke and duchess. This arch was intended to stand for 12 months as a reminder of the celebrations, however one month after the visit a strong wind blew some of the columns down blocking the road and so it was dismantled.
