Scope and contents

Shows Il Porto, Positano Italy, Vali and Gianni at Il Porto and views of the Il Porto Wildlife Oasis and surrounding buildings. Earliest photograph shows Vali seated on a painted cart at Il Porto and is dated October 1963 and an early undated Kodachrome photograph of Vali holding Foxy. Also includes an undated early photograph of Vali and Gianni standing in front of their home showing an earlier painted sun design over the front door. Most of the photographs date from the late 1990s showing the exterior of her home, a one room domed pavilion and the surroundings. Shows entrance gates to Il Porto with sculptures of animals on the front gate posts, elevated views of Il Porto and the surrounding buildings, Vali on the cliff tops and in the caves, Vali with Gianni, Vali and Foxy, portraits of Vali, Vali with her animals, Vali drawing in the Rose Pavilion, close up of Vali drawing. Shows the town of Positano, the Amalfi coast and the towering cliff face surrounding Il Porto, and the view of the Bay of Positano from Il Porto to Galli Island. Galli Island features in many of Vali's drawings and was once owned by Leonide Massine, and Rudolf Nureyev in the1980s. Most were taken in the 1990s.

General note

This group of 5 boxes of colour chromogenic photographs documents Vali's life in Ill Porto Positano, friends, some travels and Australia, most are date from 1992 to 2000. The earliest photograph is dated 1963. The photographs were also used as source material for her visual diaries, and were often pasted into them. They were also enlarged as blow-ups and laminated for display in her studio in the Nicholas Building, Melbourne. See laminated photographs at H2022.23/1-218.
