Scope and contents

Correspondence between T.C. Truman, Lecturer in Political Science, University of Queensland, and B.A.S. and W.E.C. (as editor of Rural Life), commencing with Truman’s request, 4 December 1956, for information concerning B.A.S.’s organizing to fight Communists in the unions at the request of leading Labor figures in Victoria, and for permission to ask for other information as his research progresses on his “objective study of the A.L.P. industrial groups and the faction fight inside the Labor Party”;

B.A.S.’s reply to this and subsequent requests, his unsuccessful attempt to persuade Truman to meet him in Melbourne or Sydney to avoid the difficulty of supplying full information by letter;

Truman’s request for comment on Part I of an outline and digest of reports and events;

further exchanges to 20 November 1958, including B.A.S., 15 Feb. 1958, on church-going statistics, the model for Australian Catholic Action (French rather than Italian), the distinction between Catholic Action and action of Catholics, the Executive Committee of the C.S.M, now N.C.C., the N.C.C.’s attitude to the A.L.P., personnel of the C.A. Movements, etc. etc.; B.A.S.’s enquiry and reply concerning Truman’s own views on Communism in Australia;

Rawson’s views of Group activity, etc.;

Letters and reviews following publication of Truman’s Catholic Action and Politics (Georgian House, Melb. 1959) including undated letter Fr. J.G. Murtagh to Archbishop Mannix, enclosing a draft of his 18 pp. review to appear in the Advocate, explaining his approach and asking for advice; B.A.S.’s undated “observations”, “a commentary rather than … a review”, referring to J.
