“Episcopal Correspondence", ca. 1946-1955

Scope and contents

This correspondence, with priests and laymen of the respective dioceses as well as with the bishops, deals chiefly with organizational matters including staffing and finance. Some letters are inscribed “S.S. [name of diocese]” Letters are grouped in labelled paper folders:

Adelaide, 1946 - 1955; Port Pirie, 1955 (2 letters only)

Ballarat, 1949 - 1955.

Maitland and Newcastle. Includes references to the New State Movement (New England); correspondence with priests, L. Castles and Castles to Norm Lauritz, John Crowe, Tom Luscombe, the Social Justice Form concerning a lecture, Newcastle, and ?, W.A. Enright & Son, Maitland.

Bathurst, 1955 - 1956 (4 letters only); Lismore, 1955 (2 letters); Armidale, 1955 (labeled “S.S.M. Armidale”) (4 letters).

Canberra-Goulburn, 1947, 1949 - 1954;

Brisbane, 1946 - 1955; Cairns, 5 Aug. 1955 (1 letter); Rockhampton, Dec. 1945 – 1955. Includes reports from N. Lauritz, “L”, Darwin, 1953-1954.

New Zealand (Christchurch, Wellington, Auckland, Dunedin) 1946 – 1952, chiefly requesting material in use in Australia; copies of “Boys’ Programme, Catholic Youth Movement. A Step Forward”. Sept. 1946. 4 pp; “Catholic Youth Movement, Notes for Chaplain’s Talk, July 1947.

Conditions governing access

Restricted. This has been water and mould-damaged. The papers have been dusted and brushed in sunlight, but need further treatment. The New Zealand section is perhaps the worst affected.
