Separation of C.A. Movements and Social Action.

B.A.S. to Archbishop Beovich, Adelaide, 9 July 1952 (one letter only). Concerning Beovich’s suggestion to separate the Lay Apostolate organisations embracing the Youth Movements, and social action, which appeals to B.A.S. but about which Archbishop Mannix and others have reservations; and asking how the matter might be approached.

Letter to Archbishop Duhig (sent also to other Archdioceses) advising that following the Sydney meeting of the Hierarchy last September, Dr. Mannix has informed B.A.S. of a national fund to be available for salaries of staff of the newly formed Industrial Movement and other related matters which have been decided; the three members of the newly appointed Episcopal Committee have been informed that suitable persons were available for appointment. B.A.S. enquires whether the recipient has taken steps to select the person to be appointed for his Archdiocese; when told of his wishes, will try to assist in securing a suitable person.

Movement, Brisbane. 1946.

Three letters: B.A.S. to Archbishop Duhig, 12 March (hand delivered because “not likely to be interrupted in the same way as the daily mail delivery”), concerning his impending visit to Brisbane, describing the methods adopted in Melbourne and offering to do the same in Brisbane, the need for a suitable appointment; a Rural Conference to be held in Brisbane; follow-up letters. Correspondence with Bishop Gleeson, Mr. C. Bendeich and Fr. Walsh, concerning establishment of the Rural Movement in the Diocese; also with Dr. John Toohey of Newcastle, enclosing a copy of his letter to Gleeson (from paper folder “Movement Maitland” but relating to N.C.R.M.) Movement, Rockhampton.

Single item: Fr. Leahy, Bishop’s House, Rockhampton, conveys bishop’s endorsement of suggestions for their full-time Officer (to attend a course at Belloc House, etc.) and his indignation at the “bash at you and the Show” and wanting direct influence exercised on the Youth Movements at next April’s meeting (problems in theY.C.W); the Canberra set-back foreseen, etc.

Single item: Letter to Fr. J.P. Leahy, Cathedral, 17 Feb. 1949, re success of the Rockhampton conference, the need for a priest to assist the active few.

B.A.S. to Coadjutor Bishop Stewart promising to send N.C.R.M. literature, and other matters; to Fr. J. Kiniry, Wangaratta, re organizing a group etc.

Movement (Rural) Toowoomba. 1948.

Single letter: B.AS. to Bishop Roper, asking that Fr. McCormack be released for the Rural Movement; the necessity of a priest to lead and a travelling chaplain to work with priests, etc.

Letter to Bishop Fox 10 Aug. 1945 apologizing for late arrival of a confidential memorandum, with reasons for this; will look for a suitable person to organise the National Catholic Girls’ Movement when advised of his wishes; re the National Secretary’s possible visit to Broken Hill, 7 Oct. 1948; Fox to Bishop O’Collins, 6 April 1951 enclosing his Diocese’s quota for the S.S.M. – the need for more frequent visits or the Diocese will have to withdraw (interest dead), and covering letter from O’Collins’ secretary, 13 Apr. 1951.

B.A.S. to Bishop Fox concerning Father Brady’s interest in the N.C.R.M., the possibility of a property suitable for development on the lines discussed, 1950; Fox advises of Fr. Wathen’s appointment as Diocesan Director, regrets that the Forbes meeting was not followed up by visits to parishes; explanatory reply (organiser’s breakdown etc.).
