Biographical / Historical
Keith Sydney Kings was born 12 November 1928, and grew up in Victoria, Australia. He would often visit the State Library Victoria to do research, particularly around transport which was an interest that was sparked during World War II while he was at Melbourne High School. At this point he also created models of various transport including warships. He was an Australian transport historian and photographer, known for his extensive documentation of Melbourne's public transport systems. At an early age he obtained a clerical role at the Melbourne and Metropolitan Tramways Board's Preston Workshops after completing his education, where he worked until 1956. Throughout his career, Kings captured the evolution of Melbourne's transport landscape through photography and scholarly research. He first used his father's 116 camera and then later a cousin gave him a Box Brownie. Beyond photography, Kings contributed to transport literature, authoring reports like "The Privatisation of Melbourne's Public Transport - Has the Wheel Turned Full Circle?" presented at the Second Annual RMIT Sir Robert Risson Memorial Lecture in 2002. During the 1970's he worked with his fried Robert Green and newly appointed state artist Harold Freedman and other to support the work of the 'Transport Mural' at Southern Cross Station, which depicts Victorian transport of the first 100 years of Victoria's history. He co-founded and had memberships in many societies and groups, including Transport Museum Society of Victoria (TMSV), Council of Tramway Museums of Australasia (COTMA), Bus and Coach Society Victoria (BCSV), Australian Electric Traction Association (AETA), Australian Railway Historical Society (ARHS), and was a life member of The Puffing Billy Preservation Society. Keith passed away in 2019.
