Scope and contents
The collection represents about 203 separate commissions with many alterations to hotels as well as newly designed hotels in Melbourne and suburbs and also country Victoria. Included in the collection are: the Clyde Hotel, Carlton (1923), the Quarry Hotel, Brunswick (1925), and various alterations to Naughton's Parkville Hotel. After 1933 the practice adopted the Streamline Moderne style and hotels from this period include: the Phoenix Hotel, Melbourne City (1934), the Chelsea Hotel, Chelsea (1936), the Prince of Wales Hotel, St Kilda (1937) and the Rosebud Hotel, Rosebud (1939).

Biographical / Historical
The practice of Joy and McIntyre was formed in 1920, both originally trained as engineers but registered as architects in 1922. Robert's younger brother Stewart joined the office as a draughtsman in about 1926 and was made an associate after World War 2. After 1962 Stewart was made a partner together with Robert's son and daughter-in-law, Peter and Dione McIntyre.
