General note

Top right corner of plate broken off. Most likely the opening of the Great Western Coal Mine at Benwerrin, between Lorne and Dean's Marsh. The winch which was brought from the Corona goldmine, near Daylesford, hauled the brown coal 1600 feet up a very steep incline from Box's Creek. Originally the coal then went by dray to the rail at Dean's Marsh but in 1901, a standard gauge branch line was eventually put through to the mine. The mine closed down in 1903.
