General note
Described by Gianni Menichetti in ‘Notes about Vali’s drawings in this book’ (MS 16335, Box 6/8): 'Gone to Earth' is the title of a novel by Mary Webb, the strange and wild tale of Hazel and Foxy, which Vali so oftne read in the 60s and identified with. "Gone to Earth!" is the final call of a fox-hunt to give up the chase when the fox has got away and returned to its burrow. Vali always referred to her home, the small Moorish pavilion in the Valley, as 'my burrow'. After long travels she always felt like a fox coming back from "hunting for bones" and her home was like her 'earth' or den. In the heart of the wild canyon, surrounded as always by many creatures she's lying down deep in dreams while her fox spirit is wide awake.
