Madonna dell'Arco textile design armband from Naples
Scope and contents
Textile in the shape of a rectangle with an image of Madonna dell'Arco painted in gold, red, mauve, black and white paint on blue fabric, with 4 white cotton fasteners attached to corners. Painted on fabric in gold paint: M.S.S.D.A. The festival of the Madonna dell'Arco is held on Easter Monday at the Catholic sanctuary of the Madonna dell'Arco. The festival centres around the 'battenti' or 'fujenti' guilds of devoted pilgrims who walk or run to the church wearing white outfits with blue and red sashes, often walking in socks or barefoot. The sanctuary housed the image of the Madonna which was believed to have saved it from destruction during the eruption of Vesuvius in 1631.
