Magdalene

Scope and contents

Shows Mary Magdalene with tear drops running down her face, and a bird sleeping in the palm of her hand.

Described by Vali Myers in 'Vali Myers: Drawings 1949-1979' p. 90-91: A whore with flowers, sister of Lazarus the leper, who washed the feet of Jesus with her tears and anointed them with precious ointment. Mary Magdalene, looking for the body of her Lord at daybreak sees the vision of Jesus through a veil of tears and believes him to be the gardener. The last lines written by the Little Saint Teresa of Lisieux, before she died at 24 years of age-'above all I imitate the conduct of Magdalene her stupefying or rather, her loving audacity that enchanted the heart of Jesus and captivated mine.' Dedicated to Father Peter Jacobs in New York City.
