Scope and contents
Drawing depicts Rosalia Lombardo 1918-1920 in the centre of the image, and Sicilian bandits Gaspare Pisciotta 1924-1954, and Salvatore Giuliano 1922-1950 on either side of Rosalia. In the centre of the drawing are two dead bleeding foxes. Text inscribed in black ink below figures: My poor dreams of love, blissful in the best of the joy you are perished, proud but unlucky that like the birds in the woods you are perished. The text is inscribed over a scene at Il Porto showing the small figure of Vali Myers playing a violin with foxy and a chandelier hanging, villages and a procession of miniature animals with the figure of Gianni carrying a bag of bones on his back.
Diary entry relating to Rosalia Lombardo is in the visual diary H2018.434, p. 54.
Reproduced and written about by Vali Myers in 'Vali Myers Drawings 1949-1979' p. 84-85: Dedicated to the memory of Salvatore Giuliano and Gaspare Pisciotta the two famous bandit heroes who fought and died for their dream of an independent Sicily. Only in their birthplace, Montelepre, the Mountain of the Hare, in that pure air, their brave spirits live on. Above them is the beautiful little girl, Rosalia Lombardo, who lies embalmed like a small ray of sunshine in the grey catacombs of Palermo. 'Under the lava grows the golden flower.'
