Scope and contents
Shows a portrait of Rosario Di Gennaro in the centre of the drawing, below the portrait Vali is drawing while Gianni reads to her, surrounded by the animals with Foxy and Suzy the dog, Mani the monkey, Petrushka a bantam hen and Fanny the donkey.
Inscribed in sepia ink above images depicted: Mani, Petrouchka, Gianni, Suzi. On the top right are two foxes above the waterfall 'Dido' at Il Porto.
This drawing is described by Gianni Menichetti in his 'Notes about Vali's drawings in this book' p.8 (YMS 16336 Box 6/3): This is the Portrait of Rosario 'Salvatore' Di Gennaro who looks like a Gypsy. He was Vali's most faithful friend in Positano during the last twenty years of her life. Below his portrait there is Vali on her loft bed drawing at night, while Gianni...after a heavy days work with the animals is reading to her (she loved to be read to when drawing). Between them Foxy and Suzy the dog who was her most trustworthy friend. Mani was the monkey she had in the 60's, Petruskha a snow-white bantam hen. Above by the gate of the ancient garden, Bacchus the billy-goat and Fanny the donkey. The waterfall, named after Dido, is the one behind the Moorish pavilion, Vali's house, and the two flame coloured foxes are calling out.
