Scope and contents
Shows two central figures of a woman with long red hair and man (Rudi Rappold) surrounded by animals including a dog, owl, goat and foxes. There is a raven perched on her breast. There is a view above the figures of the landscape of Il Porto showing the towering cliffs and view looking out to Galli Island with tree and birds.
Described by Gianni Menichetti in 'Notes about Vali's drawings in this book' (YMS 16336, Box 6/3): A fox-wedding in the Japanese lore is when the sun shines while it's raining. Vali's self-portrait with Rudi Rappold, her late ex-husband. In the background the Valley with animal scenes, the sea and the Galli island. Vali and Rudi used to call out to each other from a distance with high cries like fox-barks. The lines below are from Keats' 'Ode to a Nightingale'.
