Scope and contents

Shows a central female figure with tears in her eyes, red hair and a fox looking out, there is a male figure on the right playing a violin and another male figure on the left with a pink wig. They are surrounded by intricate and detailed scenes of animals and Il Porto, the domed pavilion, a statue of a Madonna and animals of varying sizes. Animals depicted include Foxy, Fingualla the donkey, a pair of ravens and goats. The ravens are standing on a green book or diary which is dated 1981 on the cover.

Described by Gianni Menichetti in 'Notes about Vali's drawings in this book' (YMS 16336, Box 6/3): Inspired by I.B. Singer's story "The Dead Fiddler", which was one of Vali's favourite tales of the Yiddish writer. The central figure with the face of Foxy looking out, although being a kind of inner self-portrait as is usual in her drawings, really represents the girl possessed by dybbuks or demons, who is in a trance while two voices speak out of her. The one of the fiddler is a portrait of Rudi, the one of the harlot with an elaborate wig a portrait of Gianni. Intricate and minute are all the scenes of the Valley and the animals and the path leading up to the ancient garden surrounded by high walls and Vali's pavilion within. In the upper left corner Fanny the donkey is desperately braying, lamenting the loss of her inseperable companion Fingualla. The two female donkeys lived together for about twenty years until one day in the early 80s Fingualla fell down a very high cliff, tragically meeting her doom. Fanny's heart-rending lament lasted for a long time. She lived to the venerable age of forty never working, like her mate, one single day in her life.
