Content Description
The collection contains Alva Geike's two-volume, unpublished history and firsthand account of the early days of the Women's Liberation movement in Melbourne, "The Women's Action Committee and the Women's Liberation Movement, Melbourne: 1969-1975". The original materials supporting this history form the bulk of the collection. These include files on individual feminist activists, groups and organisations, and women's rights, such as reproduction rights and equal pay. The files on individual Victorian feminist activists contain articles, speeches, drafts and news clippings. Victorian feminist groups and organisations active in the period 1969-1975 are represented comprehensively in the collection. Files for these groups contain meeting minutes, notes, lobbying material, published materials and their media coverage. Groups and organisations in the collection include Women's Liberation, the Council for the Single Mother and her Child, Women's Electoral Lobby, Rape Crisis Centre, Working Women's Coalition, and university groups, amongst others. Publications in the collection include feminist literary journals, magazines and zines. These espouse Liberal Feminism, Radical Feminism, Socialist Feminism, or Communist Feminism. Other publications included are from the following groups: Australian government and affiliated bodies; UNESCO and affiliated bodies; union and related organisations; community controlled childcare groups; Christian groups; libraries; and schools. Realia includes banners, badges, prints, pamphlets, and posters for Women's Liberation marches. Some prints in the collection include posters for anti-rape campaigns and women's birth control rights.

Biographical / Historical
Alva Cunningham Geike is a feminist activist, teacher and textiles professional. Geikie was born in Brunswick on 29 January 1936. She obtained a Diploma of Needlecraft from Emily MacPherson College of Domestic Economy and a Trained Teacher's Certificate to teach in junior technical schools. Alva worked as a dressmaker for Myer in Melbourne, a costumier for the Old Vic Theatre in London and taught needlecraft at Princes Hill Highschool for 11 years. While teaching, she studied Arts at Monash University. In 1969, teachers were one of the few professions to be granted Equal Pay, which was to happen in 3 steps and finalised in 1971. Alva was outraged at the decision that devalued traditionally female dominated professions. When Alva read that Zelda D'Aprano had chained herself to the doors of the Arbitration Commission to protest the poor result of the Equal Pay Case, Alva went to meet her at the Trades Hall to discuss further actions. They organised another chaining for the 31st of October 1969, when Thelma Soloman joined them. Spurred on by the media coverage and impact of their radical action, Geikie, D'Aprano, Solomon, and 'Bon' Hull began the Women's Action Committee (WAC), a precursor to the Victorian Women's Liberation Group. Through a number of radical actions, WAC campaigned for economic equality, social equality, equal education, accessible childcare and abortion law reform. These actions included pub crawls to demonstrate against the higher prices charged to women in segregated bars, and tram rides, on which they refused to pay full fare. In 1972, as other Women's Liberation (WL) groups emerged across Melbourne and Sydney, WAC decided to disband to join the larger organisation. Geike has written an unpublished history of both WAC and WL in two volumes: "The Women's Action Committee and the Women's Liberation Movement, Melbourne, 1969-1975". She was interviewed for Catherine Dwyer's film, Brazen Hussies, in 2019. Geike's teaching career extended to TESOL (teaching English as a second language) in secondary schools and teacher's colleges in Thailand. Geike settled in northern NSW during her forties where she continues to write.
