Scope and contents

This collection comprises the personal papers of the Croll family and is made up of correspondence, publications, newspaper cuttings, diaries, literary works, radio programme scripts, poetry, photographs (some are photographs of important literary and artistic figures such a C.J. Dennis, J.G. Roberts and John Shirlow), family history documents, financial records, legal documents, ephemera and realia (woodblocks, engraving pens). The photographic albums are mainly of family members and friends but also include photographs taken during Croll’s trips to Central Australia. Of particular note is an album of photographs taken at Sassafras and these show the artisitic and literary circles within which Croll moved. The papers largely cover the period from ca 1920 to 1976. However there is some material related to family history that goes back to the 1790s.

Available for reference, with some restrictions. Glass negatives will not be retrieved (F BOX 4423). Realia items in boxes 13-18 and 21-22 will be not be issued in the Heritage Collections Reading Room and will be available by appointment only. See the finding aid for further details.

Biographical / Historical

Robert Henderson Croll (c.1869-1947) was an author and public servant. He had a career in the Public Library of Victoria and the Education Department, was an avid bushwalker, and contributed articles to Bohemia, the Sydney Bulletin, the Argus and the Herald. He edited the Emu, wrote light verse, was involved with the Bread and Cheese Club, wrote a biography of Tom Roberts, edited Streeton's letters to Roberts, was general secretary of the Australian Academy of Art and was involved with the Savage Club. Also, he had a keen interest in Aboriginal culture and wrote and broadcast on this subject. Croll, with his wife Grace, and son Robin (Robert Devereaux), lived in Camberwell, Victoria.
