Biographical / Historical

Richard William Lamb, colloquially known as R.W. "Fatty" Lamb, was a Victorian cycling champion of the 1920s and 1930s. Lamb had a highly succesful amateur career where he dominated the Australian cycling scene, setting numerous long standing records in the process. He turned professional in 1928 after being controversially overlooked for the 1928 Amsterdam Olympic Games. His success continued at the professional level as he toured the USA in 1929 for 6 months and won numerous titles including the Australian national road race title in 1930 and 1932. He competed with such contemporaries as Hubert Opperman, with whom he teamed in the 1931 Tour de France where he finished in 35th and last place before going on to win the Grand Prix de Marseilles (motor pace). Lamb continued to race professionally until 1934 and was also an accomplished shooter, winning awards from a young age until well into the 1960s.
