Content Description

The Marion Page Archive contains a wide range of material relating to Marion Orme Page and her parents, Sir Clive and Lady Sidney McPherson. The collection holds personal papers, financial records, correspondence, textiles and other realia, film reels, and photographs that span Marion's lifetime. These records include material from her school years at Toorak College, Frankston (1930-1935); her studies in Arts, Law, and Commerce at the University of Melbourne in the late 1930s and 1940s; her work as a lawyer with Mallesons Stewart & Co. (1941-1944); her time serving in the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (W.A.A.A.F) (1944-1947); her employment as the personal and private secretary to Lady Violet Brooks in the 1950s; her first marriage to Dr. Julian Orm Smith and her second marriage to Brian Page; and a series of organisations with which she was involved, including the Royal Melbourne Hospital and the Cottage by the Sea, Queenscliff (run by the Ministering Children's League).

The collection also includes business documents and financial records relating to the family's large rural properties, primarily Boomanoomana and Tarramia, both near Mulwala, with which Sir Clive McPherson and Marion were both involved. There are receipts, correspondence, and account books that detail the maintenance involved with the properties, the running of the estates, and the stock and produce they produced. There are also personal papers, documents, and photographs from the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that relate to the McPherson and Wolfenden families, alongside later research documents into the family history. This material includes documents from different stages of Sir Clive's career as an influential pastoralist and businessman, his involvement with Younghusband Ltd., and the family's connection with Sir Robert Menzies, the Menzies family, and other prominent government officials.

Biographical / Historical

Marion Orme Page (nee McPherson) (1918-2015) was born in Armadale, Victoria, to Sir Clive McPherson (1884-1958) and Lady Sidney Marion Orme Isabel McPherson (nee Wolfenden) (1879-1946). Educated at Toorak College, Frankston, and The University of Melbourne (initially as a resident of Janet Clarke Hall and later as a non-resident student), she obtained a Bachelor of Laws in 1940 and was the first female articled clerk at Mallesons, Stewart & Co. After practicing as a lawyer, she enrolled in the Women's Auxiliary Australian Air Force (W.A.A.A.F) and had attained the rank of Section Officer when she was discharged in 1947. Marion was later employed as the personal and private secretary to Lady Violet Brooks, the wife of Sir Dallas Brooks, Governor of Victoria 1949-1963, and assisted Lady Brooks during Queen Elizabeth II's 1954 Royal Visit to Australia. After her mother passed away in 1946, Marion assisted her father with the family's agricultural properties - especially Tarramia, near Mulwala, which she purchased from the Estate of Lady Sidney M. O. McPherson in 1954 and held up until her death in 2015. She also accompanied him on overseas trips. In 1960, Marion married Dr. Julian Orm Smith, a surgeon at the Royal Melbourne Hospital. After his death in 1971, Marion re-married in 1975 to Brian Page. Following in her mother's footsteps, Marion was involved with the Ministering Children's League - the charity that runs The Cottage by the Sea, Queenscliff. She was also on a series of management committees for the Royal Melbourne Hospital and involved with other charitable organisations such as The Lady Gowrie Child Centre, the Women's Committee of the Cancer Campaign, and the Red Cross.

Sir Clive McPherson and Lady Sidney McPherson were both born in St. Arnaud, Victoria. Sidney McPherson was the daughter of James Jackson Wolfenden, a doctor, and Marion Sidney Orme. Clive McPherson was the son of William George McPherson, a bank manager, and Alice Gertrude Mogg. He was educated at Caulfield Grammar School and initially started working in banking before pursuing a career in the agricultural industry. After working in a range of jobs and positions, he became a managing partner of the auctioneering business, McPherson, Thom, Kettle & Co. and began to purchase property. Sir Clive and Lady Sidney McPherson were married on the 7th July 1915 at St. Peter's Eastern Hill, Victoria Australia. They acquired the family homestead, Boomanoomana, in Mulwala, New South Wales in 1920, but moved to Melbourne in 1933. Clive McPherson was a prominent pastoralist and businessman in Australia throughout the first half of the twentieth century. He served on a range of different boards, such as the Diary Produce Export Control Board, the Australian Wheat Board, the board of the National Bank of Australasia, and the board of the Commonwealth Bank. He was also involved with the company Younghusband Ltd. and was an Australian government representative on the British Phosphate Commission from 1927-46. Clive McPherson was appointed a Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 1925 and received a knighthood in 1941.

Arrangement

Due to the absence of an overall clear and logical original order, this collection was sorted and grouped during processing based on the document types, functions of the records, and the document creators. In individual situations where a specific order was present, the original order has been maintained and notes are included throughout the Finding Aid to indicate where this is the case.

Seven artificial series divisions have been created. The first two series divide the professional and personal papers by creator or compiler, based on if the material relates to Marion Page or to her parents, Sir Clive and Lady Sidney McPherson. Due to the scale and nature of the documents in the first two series, further sub-series divisions have been created based on the format, function or subject matter. The last five series are format based and contain material that relates to the family as a whole.

Due to the interconnected nature of the material, especially in Series 1 and 2, there are situations when the creator is not always clear and there are occasions when a folder may contain items relating to both Marion Page and her parents. There are also situations where the material in the folders crosses between series and sub-series categories. In these situations, the material has been placed in the series or sub-series that it best fits and notes have been added where appropriate to explain the context and content of the folder.

General note

As the collection spans the full breath of Marion Page’s life, it holds material that refers to her under her maiden name (Marion McPherson) and her two married names (Marion Orme Smith and Marion Page). There is also material relating to her parents from before they were married, which refers to her mother, Lady Sidney McPherson, by her maiden name (Sidney Wolfenden). To keep the context that the use of these names bring, in the scope and content notes for individual files and items the direct name on the material has been used.
