Biographical / Historical

Alfred William Crowe was born at Southend, Essex and came to Port Phillip and the Ballarat Goldfields after prospecting for gold in California. There is some evidence that he may have participated in the Eureka Rebellion, but it is certain that between 1856-1890 he worked on small mining ventures in Ballarat and Carngham. In 1962 he opened the first school in Pitfield, later relocating to teach in schools in Cape Clear, Winchelsea and Happy Valley. He was the Principal of Glengarry State School No. 2888 from 1889-93.
