Biographical Information

Sir Harry Brookes Allen (1854-1926) was a pathologist and medical administrator. In 1891, he married Ada Rosalie Elizabeth Mason (1862-1933). Lady Allen was a community worker. Sir Harry and Lady Allen had three daughters. Edith Margaret Allen (b. 1892) was a journalist with the Argus and Australasian newspapers and wrote cooking notes for the Herald (Melbourne) using the name "Sarah Dunne". She may also have used the pseudonyms "Jane Quest" and "Vesta". Mary Cecil Allen (1893-1962) was an artist, writer and lecturer on art who was known in the U.S.A., her adopted home, as "Cecil Allen". Beatrice Bicknell Allen (d. 1972) was a musician and published music reviews under the names "Biddy Allen" and "Bicknell Allen". None of the sisters married. George Thomas Allen (1852-1940) was a public servant and first Secretary of the Commonwealth Treasury, retiring in 1916. He was unmarried.
