Scope and contents

Personal papers of stage and film actor, writer, director, producer, author and lecturer, Tim Robertson (b.1944), numbering 23 boxes. This collection provides a slice of history of Australian (and particularly Melbourne) theatre from the late 1960s to 2010. Features of the collection are the scripts (some rare) and Tim Robertson's notebooks spanning 36 years to 2008, which include personal material and much material on what would become 'Manning Clark's History of Australia, the musical'. Other notable content is the audio-visual material, including oral history interviews of former Australian Performing Group actors and photographs. Another feature of these papers are documents relating to the Australian Performing Group and the Pram Factory used by Tim Robertson for his publication 'The pram factory: The Australian Performing Group Recollected' (Carlton, Vic. : Melbourne University Press, 2001), a mint copy is included in this collection.Also includes some correspondence to and from John Timlin, Tim Robertson's agent.

Biographical / Historical

Tim Robertson, stage and film actor, writer, director, producer, author, editor, reviewer and lecturer, was born on 8 May, 1944, in Essex, United Kingdom. The Robertson family immigrated to Western Australia in 1953 and Tim completed his schooling in Perth. Attending the University of Western Australia, he graduated in 1965 with 1st class honours in English. Robertson taught at Antioch College, Ohio and then at a secondary college at Dulwich Hill, Sydney. Awarded a post-graduate scholarship to Flinders University, Adelaide, in 1969, he undertook an MA on didactic theatre, specifically forms of the 'Living Newspaper' and subsequently directed the living newspaper on censorship, ‘The Truth About the Protection Racket’, also written by him. Between the years 1970-1972, he tutored and then lectured in Drama at Flinders University. In 1972, Robertson joined the Australian Performing Group (APG) as an actor, director and occasional writer and was a member of the group until 1979. Receiving a Literature Board Grant, he became a resident writer with the APG in 1974. After his time at the APG, Robertson acted in stage, film and television productions. His writing and directing credits are numerous and cover diverse genres.
