Scope and Contents Note

This collection comprises literary drafts and proofs of more than twenty novels written by Sonya Hartnett, from her first novel "Trouble All the Way", published in 1984 to her latest one "Golden Boys", published in 2014. Together with various set of drafts, edited drafts, and final proofs, are her research/working notebooks, editorial queries, readers' reports, publishing and editorial correspondence, agreements/contracts with Australian and International publishers, publicity materials, book reviews, sketches, ephemera; Also developed scripts for the stage production; early materials including unpublished short stories in typescript and in handwriting (1987-1994).

There are DVDs of Studio Recordings, cassette tapes of radio interviews with Sonya, and a video cassette (VHS) titled "Sonya's Big Break! August' 84", recording Sonya's TV appearances and launch party of "Trouble All The Way", 1984. Three computer laptops contain files of Sonya's writings (speeches/talks and literary drafts), and also reviews, grant applications, invoices, essays, etc. There is a small collection of letters from Maurice Saxby, other writers, and fans. The collection also contains a number of talks and speeches (1997-2011) delivered by Sonya Hartnett at various writers' festivals and workshops, most of them are typescripts. There are files of financial papers which includes royalty statements, fellowship grants and writer's grants, invoices and statements, and payment advice. And also, a number of photographs of Sonya, taken at literary events.

Biographical Note

Sonya Hartnett was born in 1968, in Box Hill, Melbourne, Victoria. She received a Bachelor of Arts, Media Studies from RMIT Melbourne in 1991.

Sonya Hartnett is an author of fiction for adults, young adults, and children. Her most recent book was published in 2021.

Sonya Hartnett was thirteen years old when she wrote her first novel and fifteen when it was published in Australia, "Trouble All the Way" (Adelaide: Rigby Publishers, 1984). Many of her books have been published in the UK and in North America, also translated into foreign languages such as Norwegian, Dutch, Korean, Chinese, and French.

Sonya Hartnett's work has won numerous Australian and international literary prizes. In both 2000 and 2003, she was named one of The Sydney Morning Herald Young Novelists of the Year. She was the first Australian author awarded the world’s most prestigious prize for children’s writers, the Astrid Lindgren Memorial Award (2008).
