Historical Information
In 1855 the Victorian Institute for the Advancement of Science and the Philosophical Society of Victoria (both founded 1854) combined to form the Philosophical Institute of Victoria, subsequently renamed the Royal Society of Victoria. Its object, according to its rules, is the promotion of Science, Literature and Art, but for many years it has devoted its attention to Science alone. Its most famous undertaking was the Burke and Wills expedition of 1860-1861.
