Diary, 1869
Abstract
[M8590] The principal entries are in Fawkner’s hand, mostly dealing with financial transactions, his health and attendance by doctors. 1869 was the year of Fawkner’s death and his handwriting shows a marked infirmity. There are a number of entries in another hand (1 Mar, 9 Apr, 28 May, 29 May, 21 June), all relating to household business: the author was presumably a member of Fawkner’s household. The pages from 14 July to 4 November, a period which covers the date of his death (4 September), have been torn out. Scribbling in a large round hand appears in parts of the diary (front cover, May 10-16, blotter sheets just before 4 November) and features repetitions of the names J.J. Walsh, J.P. Fawkner and Drouin South. John Joseph Walsh (1819-1895) was a close friend of Fawkner and married his widow Eliza. Drouin South was the location if his country property. Printed on cover: “Letts 1869 Diary”.
