General note

Addressed, Malta. Regrets that he did not see the sketch of Story's planned statue of Sappho when visiting his studio in Rome.

Wishes to direct his thoughts to the letter of Sappho to Phaon by Ovid, and to the opinion of Sappho's characteristics contained therein.

The descriptions of Sappho vary from the conventional depictions of the poetess.

Shakespeare gives a similar portrait of Cleopatra. (8 pages. Draft)
