Childers, Hugh Culling Eardley, 15 April, 1859
Dates
- 15 April, 1859
General note
Addressed, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne. The "Boeotian herd" (the Victorian puplic) do not yet appreciate the importance of Childers' work, but the growth of the library will help to remedy this.
Parliament would not allow Mr. Tulk to go home.
Another order sent to Mr. Guillaume. Hopes that Childers will visit him in London and make him see the importance of sending orders quickly.
Hoping that he will help to obtain reports, maps, etc. from the Admiralty, India House and other Government offices for the library. The two thousand pounds Barry hoped for to purchase works of art was not obtained. Suggests plaster casts of statues and photographs of architectual illustrations, which would not be too expensive.
Barry would like two fountains in the front of the library. Problem with the circulating department, but hopes to please the country members.
Re the change in the University statutes relating to residence in term.
Evans, who succeeded Duffy in the Ministry, has "eaten much dirt" at his election for Richmond.
The new club house. Barnard and the accounts. (4 pages. Typed)
