General note

Addressed, Carlton Gardens, Melbourne. Thanking him for his efforts made on behalf of the Council. The sum of one hundred pounds remitted to him, on his estimation of the cost.

Hopes to establish a medicine school if enough money can be obtained, but the demands on finances are enormous. The retirement of Mr. Duffy from the Ministry. Doubts whether he and the Chief Secretary will be able to join together, or that Mr. Duffy will join his enemies.

The difficulty of getting good candidates for the coming elections due to the best men being away. Danger of the Government drifting into hands of Messrs. Don and Osborne.

The library progressing well. The new addition. Trouble with Guillaume, an English bookseller. Has not given reductions which the library is entitled to, and has charged more for some books than other booksellers.

The library has nine thousand pounds for books and hopes to have Childers' help, due to the greater risk of overcharge in dealing with expensive books. Best wishes to Mrs. Childers. (3 pages. Typed)
