Thanks for birthday verses. Has been shocked to read that he had promised to obtain a nomination for Clarke's son at Christ's Hospital or Charterhouse, both of which are beyond his powers. Has been approached on the subject of a cheap edition of His Natural Life, but does not think it is justified. Prospect of the Government printing Clarke's works. Cannot obtain a commission as correspondent for Mackinnon, but suggests he work as a journalist and use himself as a reference. (4 pages)
