Martin, Arthur Patchett, Savage Club, London, to Hamilton Mckinnon, 10 April, 1884

 Item — box-folder: 455.2

Abstract

Age correspondent to blame for public mention of money remitted to Marion Clarke. Will see Lord Rosebery soon. Wants advance sheets of the memorial volume sent to Melbourne and Sydney papers. He has done all he can to bring Marcus Clarke before the English public, but fears Mackinnon will think he has been too critical of him. Clarke was too great a man to be flattered, and a judicious estimate would serve him best. Does not think a talented radical journalist would leave London to go to Australia. Has heard some bad news of Nellie Stewart. Would not like to be back in Melbourne, as some petty people do much to make colonial life unpleasant. Scandalous stories being told in Melbourne about himself are quite untrue. (4 pages)
