Letter from Walter Cass to Helena Holmes, 1916 October 4
Dates
- 1916 October 4
Note:
He discusses wedding plans and his frustration over lost luggage. He mentions Sergeant Stringer. He is still eating meals at the George Hotel but hopes the mess will be operational soon. He has seen the Brigadier of the 15th Battalion that day and has heard details from him of an unnamed battle. The details include information on 'the failure of those English troops on his right - and how they let him down a second time that day . . . it appears they sent to him saying they would attack at 10pm and would he cooperate. He got permission to do so and sent his men over. At 10.30 they told him they would not be ready until morning . . . He says that two of the brigadiers were sacked but it does not bring to life the hundreds of brave Australians killed by the failure of these people.'
