General note
The SAP '9X5' exhibition was a homage to the 'nine by five' exhibition of artists' impressions of amongst others, Arthur Streeton, Charles Condor, Tom Roberts and Frederick McCubbin, held at Buxton's Art Gallery, Swanston Street, Melbourne, opening on 17 August, 1889. In the earlier exhibition, the artists paintings were 9 inches long and 5 inches wide and were painted on cedar cigar box lids sourced from Louis Abrahams, whose family owned a cigar import and packaging business. "The works were small, affordable and popular"...and "a protest and a political statement against the prevailing attitudes of the day and the academy paintings of the establishment".
S.A.P. was strongly supported by a number of artists including Andrew Sibley, Mike Green, Tim Bass, Glyn Williams and Pamela Ashcroft. In 1995, the artists who formed the art committee of SAP, were involved in the creation of the Oberwyl Panels. These panels were displayed on the fence of the historic property on the corner of Princes and Barkly Streets St Kilda for 14 months. The original owners of Oberwyl were patrons of Streeton, Roberts and other Australian impressionists.
173 artists exhibited 298 works in the Save Albert Park exhibition of 1995, held at the Robert Lindsay Gallery, 45 Flinders Lane, Melbourne. They included Davida Allan, Rick Amor, Howard Arkley, Charles Blackman, Judy Cassab, Lewis Miller, Arthur Boyd, Michael Leunig, John Olsen, Lin Onus, Robin Wallace-Crabbe, Jan Senbergs, Andrew Sibley, Leonard French, Mirka Mora and Ron Robertson-Swann.
