Series VIII: Newspaper clippings., 1994 - 1996
Dates
- 1994 - 1996
General note
From December, 1993, after an announcement by the Victorian Government that they were actively working to have the Australian Formula 1 race transferred from Adelaide to Melbourne to run in the Albert Park Reserve, public comment, both for and against, became a common thing in the press.
From early 1994, Dr Harry Ward maintained a collection of newspaper clippings on the Albert Park Grand Prix issue. Subsequently, the Collection was maintained by the Information Working Group, which first met in March, 1994.
This became an on-going operation supervised by a few information professionals and eventually performed in the SAP Office. The 'Herald-Sun' and 'The age' were regularly clipped and also the local weekly papers which covered several of the Melbourne inner-south-eastern suburbs. 'The Australian' newspaper was subsequently added to this list. During the running of the Grand Prix, it was not uncommon to clip articles from a greater coverage of magazines and journals.
General articles, editorials and letters to the editor were included.
There are a few early articles, including a printout from 'The Age' dated 5 August, 1899 and and other news items from 1934. Included are printouts of letters to the editor published prior to 1994. The items are organised in date order, supported by a subject index and author index.
