Series III: Daybooks., 1994 - 2007
Dates
- 1994 - 2007
General note
Originally, the Daybook was called the 'Phone Book' and then the 'Telephone Message Book'. The term 'Daybook' was adopted to reflect more accurately what was meant to be recorded, ie. all activities, messages, phone conversations, phone messages, visitors to the Office, etc. The Office was staffed by rostered volunteers, who needed to remain in daily communication.
The initial date in the 'Phone Book' is most likely the day the Office opened at 313 Dorcas Street, South Melbourne. For most of the time the Office was at that address, Sylvia Needs was the Office Manager. Sylvia was in the Office from Monday to Thursday each week, along with another gentleman, Gordon [surname unknown]. Many other volunteers assisted to cover the five and a half days that the Office was open.
For a short time, from 17 July, 1995, another book entitled 'Handover Book' was used, concurrently but intermittently.
The daybooks contain information that each volunteer needed to know when beginning their shift. They occasionally contain humorous and quirky comments.
