Series 10: Library
Note:
Howard Arkley library material forwarded to State Library of Victoria, August 2013
Summary and annotations by John Gregory
Introductory remarks:
This material comprises a substantial portion of Howard Arkley’s studio/professional library. Together with material already catalogued as part of the Howard Arkley collection, SLV MS 14217 (especially under Series 1, 4, 5 and 6), these books and journals/magazines comprise the most significant items in Arkley’s library. They include a number of doodled and otherwise altered copies, and various references clearly consulted by him during his career. In the annotations (made in July 2013), I refer where relevant to my own discussions of the light shed on aspects of Arkley’s art by his library, in “Howard Arkley’s legacy”, Eyeline 44 (Summer 2000/2001), Carnival in Suburbia (2006), and the online catalogue, http://arkleyworks.com.
It should be noted that Arkley’s library was originally considerably larger. Various unmarked journals and books have been discarded, and a number of books and catalogues have been retained by Alison Burton as part of her own personal and professional library.
The present material is grouped into 7 categories as follows:
1: Kids’ books, colouring books etc.
2: Interior Decorator, Gardening etc. & Pattern books; & “Magic Eye” books
3: Art Books (Misc./International): (i) General; (ii) Individual Artists
4: Australian art/artists books & catalogues: (i) General; (ii) Individual Artists
5: Miscellaneous (inc. Australiana, Engineering & Technical books)
6: Journals & Magazines – Art & Miscellaneous (Australian/International)
7: Journals & Magazines – Architecture, House & Garden etc. (Australian/International)
NB throughout, an asterisk* indicates an item with substantial/significant alterations by Arkley.
A hash # indicates that copies of clipped/amended pages have been included from intact library copies for comparison.
