Scope and contents

B.A.S. to Harold Holt, 21 July 1952, forwarding documents relating to a migrant land settlement plan for the West Coast of Tasmania (draft indenture attached between August Vogel of Zeehan and the Commissioner of Crown Lands); B.A.S. to R.G. Menzies, 11 Aug. 1952, following up interview with written proposals (central one being that the Federal Government assist a co-operative society to be formed by the N.C.R.M. in establishing a community land settlement on the West Coast of Tasmania on the lines described (3 p. roneoed).

Strong, Bureau of Agricultural Economics, Canberra, 18 Aug. 1952 , Pat Ryan, Department of External Territories, 21 Nov.1952 re Menzies’ rejection of the colonisation proposal; Archbishop Mannix and other Archbishops, 24 Nov. 1952 re the conclusions of the meeting of Mr. Cosgrove and the Italian Minister, Dr. S. Daneo, and discussions with Minister of Immigration Holt, Draft “Memorandum on Tasmanian Migrant Settlement” with reply signed by J.D. Simonds; Henshke to B.A.S. on progress; Niall Browne, Binalong, on his talk with Bishop Young concerning the settlement project and reply, Dec.-Jan. 1952-1953; to Fr. Kent, Cygnet, 29 Jan. 1953, concerning the official inspection of the two areas offered for colonisation; Archbishop Tweedy, Hobart, to B.A.S. re Granville Harbour; Noel Stock, Hobart, to B.A.S., 4 Aug. 1953, supplying information to help with the project to settle several hundred German and Australian families, possibly in Tasmania, with reply on the back; “Projects for settlements in Tasmania” with financial statement. Agreement: August Vogel of Zeehan, Grazier, and B.A.S., Secretary (the Purchaser) re sale of 91,00 acres for the N.C.R.M., 15 Aug. 1952, and letter Vogel to B.A.S., 19 Aug. 1952 with newscutting, “Ford Aid for U.N. Refugee Problem”, Statement by B.A.S. concerning the co-operative.
