Scope and contents

Correspondence with the Very Rev. F.H.J. Kent, P.P., Cygnet, Tas, 14 Oct. 1952 concerning the Halton Plan; and to the Most Rev. E.V. Tweedy, D.D., Hobart, concerning August Vogel of Zeehan’s obtaining of 70,000 acres in the Granville Harbour District through the Archbishop’s good offices to settle European migrants, Vogel’s limited resources, and his request that BAS try to arrange help; BAS’s advantage of friendship of Cosgrove and the latter’s promise of assistance, etc.; the proposal for colonisation similar to that Italians have made familiar in North Africa as outlined in earlier letter to the P.M., copy enclosed (not here). Hopes for other areas in the North-East Tasmania now being tested to for suitability; contact already established with Catholic migration authorities in Europe a technical mission requested from Italy (to arrive in the next few months) to investigate selected areas and devise colonisation plans; capital: negotiations in train with the Federal and Italian Governments, Colin Clark investigating the possibilities of American and British capital, etc. etc. Requests the services of Fr. Kent of Cygnet to negotiate, seek farmers advice etc. in Tasmania. The Colonisation Institute of the Italian Government has asked for a report on the Granville Harbour area from some experienced farmers.
