Jenkins lives in his cottage in Maldon. He is employed by the Shire Council to clear roads and water channels and to do other odd jobs. He comments on his unsuccessful trip to Melbourne to recover a debt from a farmer; bad conduct of children at bush picnics; severe drought; bushfires and dust storms; scarcity and high cost of water and dairy products; tragic accident on the railway line near Castlemaine; burglary at his cottage; lecture tour of Mr Beavan from Wales; difficult economic conditions and widespread unemployment made worse by poor farming practices; an unseasonal snow fall in March; general election at which Liberals gained a majority over Conservatives; burial of geese poisoned when grazing in water channels; conversation in Welsh with friends W. Williams and John Davies; toothache and high cost of dental treatment; end of drought in May; profitable gold claims near Maldon; deaths of Mr Reckets and Simon Maler; marriage of his daughter Jane in Wales; letters from daughter Nell and granddaughter Lizzie; further visits from John Davies; hail storm in August; dizzy spell after missing breakfast; reply to letter from nephew Jenkin Jenkins who had invited him to return to Wales; need for next generation to take better care of rich Australian soil; flourishing grain crops in October; productive vegetable yields cultivated by Chinese gardeners; visit of circus which occurs once every five years; hurricane in October; financial mismanagement by colonial government; difficulty in walking; Melbourne Cup; wedding of Miss Annie Calder to Dr Eadie of Bendigo; death of nephew Jenkin Jenkins; high rate of suicide in the colony; search for lost purse containing his valuables; and costs of harvesting corn.
