Scope and contents
Jenkins lives in his cottage in Maldon. He is employed by the Shire Council to clear roads and water channels, hang gates, and other odd jobs. He comments on the hot summer; bushfires; floods; difficulty of writing with injured fingers; typhoid cases; water shortages; mining board election; visit to cemetery to read inscriptions; foot injury caused by hot water spill which incapacitates him for weeks; no wages when unable to work; influenza affecting many residents including himself; visits from Mrs Rees, John Davies, William Williams, Mr and Mrs Hopkins of Walmer; dysentery; stay in hospital; composes verses in memory of William Rees and Rev. Charles Jones; Council election; strikes causing rising prices; death of wealthy David Davies in Wales; insurance fire at a nearby cottage; suicide of the manager of the London Chartered Bank; drowning of 'the silver king'; a lecture on total abstinence; Hospital Sunday fundraising; helping Mrs Rees with haymaking; death of brother Benjamin; locust plague; fire at Mr Oswald's claim; and his trip to Rheola on Boxing Day to collect his earlier Australian diaries and to visit the grave of friend David Evans.
