Bushfires; Jenkins is re-contracted by the Council at a wage of £1 per week; he buys a small house; is kept awake by Chinese New Year celebrations; a piece of quartz containing gold to the value of £300 is retrieved from local mines; there is a train accident in Tasmania; he is ill with bronchitis and dysentery; an earthquake in the United States; Mining Association annual gala is held at Maldon; he comments on the excellent gardening practices of local Chinese population; joins William Skinner and his family for Christmas dinner.
