The first inscription is misleading, as John Paton was born on Braehead Farm, Parish of Kirkmahoe, Dumfries, and only moved to Torthorwald when John was 5 years old.

General note

Titled from inscription on mount: John G. Paton's birthplace, Torthorwald, Scotland; Inscriptions on the back in 3 hands: Photograph of the cottage at Torthorwald showing memorial tablet; J.G.P.'s birth place; The Paton cottage was of architectural significance in that the thatch roof was placed and supported over the branches of a tree. No nails were used in the construction.
