Scope and contents

Covers 28 December 1973 to 11 February 1975, although the diary is dated '1974-1975' inside front cover. From Il Porto Italy to Amsterdam and New York City. The last entry shows photograph of Vali riding Ed van der Elsken's Russian horse in Edam Holland during filming for Ed's film about Vali. Inside the diary there is a note: 'This black note book begun 28th December 1973'. Includes photograph titled 'My little Mother and me when she came to visit from Australia' p. 26, the story and a photograph of Rosalia Lombardo (1918-1920) who features in her drawing titled 'Montelepre' H2019.292/1 p. 54. Includes a piece of Foxy's fur p. 56, 136, 138. Small detailed drawing of a 'little black hare from my Renard Subtil drawing' p. 94. Loose item, a copy of a Dutch cheque money from Woody for payment for a sold drawing between pages 84 and 85, and a list of Drawings sold with names of owners from Gallery Husstege exhibition 1974 Amsterdam. There is a note pasted on p. 104 with an address for Rev. Brother C. M. Valdes Rice High School, New York, on the verso of this note written tightly near the pasted edge is the following notation: TR61802. Foldout attached to back cover inscribed in Vali's hand 'The hand-made paper I use for my drawings comes from this very old paper-mill in Amalfi, near where we live'. Some culturally sensitive images on p. 88, 117-118.

General note

Title and dates inscribed inside front cover. Title page is inscribed: …the tears of the hunted hare. Dedicated to all the golden bees and foxies of this world. To the 4 winds and the 7 seas- to the dogs who die alone in the rain. This black note book begun 28th December, 1973. Written by a little wallaby who was told by her Mother to catch all her tears in a match-box and they would turn to jewels. Includes lines from Edith Sitwell poem, 'Still falls the rain'.
